Identifying and Preventing Substance Abuse in the Asian Pacific Islander Community

Presented in Cooperation with the National Asian Pacific American Families Against Substance Abuse – Technical Assistance Project of California

VCAABA was honored to have Sam H. Joo, CAS speak about substance abuse issues (for the elusive MCLE substance abuse credits!). Mr. Joo spoke about how to understand the signs and symptoms of drug abuse in Asian families, and how to gain insight on how Asian cultural and family dynamics impact substance abuse. Mr. Joo spoke about how to identify culturally appropriate interventions and service referrals.

Mr. Joo is currently the Prevention Director with the Asian American Drug Abuse Program and has been involved in working in the social service community for the past 15 years in the field of substance abuse, mental health, and youth development. He serves as Treasurer and Co-Chair of the Alcohol and Other Drugs Committee of the Asian Pacific Policy & Planning Council, a Los Angeles County organization.
